10 Redeness Street

Our fourth and current Hackspace is Units 1 & 2, 10 Redeness Street, York. We moved into here on 1 March 2024 from our previous hackspace in 35 Hospital Fields Road. While this hackspace is ground floor, it is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible due to access door widths and a small step. Hopefully we can fix this in the near future with a ramp.

Visiting

The Weekly Open Evening is a great time to visit the space and see what we do. If you can't make it to an open evening, ask in the Discord about visiting.

Getting Here

York Hackspace is conveniently located just slightly east of York City Centre, and is easily accessible by cycling, on foot, by public transport, and by car from within York as well as many outlying villages and towns.

Walking

The Hackspace can be accessed from James Street. From town, the fastest way is via Stonebow / Peasholme Green. We are around 15 minutes walk from the centre of York and 30 from the Rail Station, about 30 minutes walk from the University of York (West campus) and around 20 minutes walk from York St John University buildings.

We are also very close to the point where the old Layerthorpe/Derwent Valley Light Railway line touches James Street (now part of the Foss Islands Route cycle path). Note that this is not well lit at night.

Buses

Several services stop at Layerthorpe Asda, which is close by - the local 6 and 11 routes, plus the 840 and 843 which service Leeds, Malton, Scarborough and Whitby all stop here. The 25 (Fulford to Derwenthorpe), the X46/X47 from Hull/Beverley/Market Weighton/Pocklington/Wilberfoss and the 8 (Grimston Bar P&R) all stop at Morrisons which is also close (note that the 8 only passes close by on the way into town). The Transdev CastleLine bus (Castle Howard and Malton) also stops close by.

Cars

Redeness Street can be quite tight for parking, especially between 6pm and 10pm. One side of the road is no-parking between 7am and 5pm but the whole road is available to park on outside of those times. Morrison's car park is free for 2 hours and does not seem to require shopping in-store, but cannot be extended beyond that stay.

The Sainsburys/GoOutdoors car park at Foss Bank here is around 10 mins walk from the space, and is free after 6pm.

Getting Inside

For guests on open nights: Press the button on the intercom (labelled York Hackspace) a few times and someone will come to let you in. If the doorbell doesn't work, ask in the discord.

For members: Enter the front door with your key (the key goes in the _higher_ of the two locks, look up). Turn the key to unlock, then keep turning and hold it in place while you pull the door open.

You then need to go _all_ the way to the back of the building, staying on the ground floor. You'll go through the "garage" area, then along the corridor all the way to the end. The last two doors you come to are the two hackspace rooms.

Leaving the Space

Switch off any equipment you’ve been using and clean up any dust/swarf/etc., replace any tools back to where they normally live and generally, look to leave the space in the same (or better!) state than you found it in.

For members:

If someone else is using the space, you don’t need to double-lock the door: just make sure the door is securely shut behind you as you leave.

If you’re the last person leaving the space:

  • Make sure the aircon unit is switched off using the remote
  • Check the fire exit door in Room 1 is closed
  • Switch off the lights as you leave (the toilet lights are on motion sensors/timers)
  • Make sure the door is shut behind you and make sure to lock it (single turn of the key to the left, the key goes in the _higher_ of the two locks).
